Buttermilk cinnamon rolls with cream cheese icing

Buttermilk cinnamon rolls with cream cheese icing are a delicious treat that combines the richness of buttermilk, the warmth of cinnamon, and the tanginess of cream cheese. Here’s a basic recipe to make these delightful rolls:

Ingredients:

For the dough:

2 and 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 package (2 and 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
1/2 cup buttermilk
1/4 cup water
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
1 large egg
For the filling:

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
3/4 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
For the cream cheese icing:

4 ounces cream cheese, softened
1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 cup powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions:

In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of flour, sugar, salt, and yeast. Mix well.

In a small saucepan, heat the buttermilk and water over low heat until warm (about 110°F or 43°C). Remove from heat and add melted butter.

Pour the warm buttermilk mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until well combined. Add the egg and mix again.

Gradually add the remaining flour, 1/4 cup at a time, until the dough forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the bowl.

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release any air bubbles. Roll it out into a rectangle, approximately 1/4 inch thick.

Spread the softened butter evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges. Sprinkle the brown sugar and cinnamon mixture over the butter.

Starting from one long side, tightly roll up the dough into a log shape. Pinch the seam to seal.

Cut the log into 12 equal slices and place them in a greased baking dish or a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Cover the rolls with a clean kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

Bake the cinnamon rolls for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

While the rolls are baking, prepare the cream cheese icing. In a mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese and butter until creamy. Add powdered sugar and vanilla extract, and continue to beat until smooth and well combined.

Once the rolls are done baking, remove them from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes. Drizzle the cream cheese icing over the warm rolls.

Serve the buttermilk cinnamon rolls warm and enjoy!

These buttermilk cinnamon rolls with cream cheese icing are perfect for breakfast or as a sweet treat any time of the day. Feel free to customize the recipe by adding chopped nuts or raisins to the filling if desired. Enjoy!
